Retrofitting of vessels from steel wire to HMPE (High Modulus PolyEthylene) mooring lines

The synthetic rope industry for offshore applications is still in its infancy and the presence of properly trained and qualified staff is vital to ensure the customer obtains the maximum life and economic benefit from these products, without causing catastrophic failure during use. KTL Marine Services synthetic rope technicians undergo a rigorous training program delivered by various rope manufacturers. The technicians are trained in the correct and best splicing and installation methods, inspection and discard criteria of all of the products offered.

Pre-Installation Inspection and Consultation

A synthetic rope solutions expert will be able to advise the customer on the best product to use for a specific job. This will eliminate the most common problem associated with synthetic ropes – incorrect application and use.
The technician will conduct an on-site inspection of the proposed working area and advise on the pre-installation preparation needed to prime the area for the use of synthetic rope so as to maximize rope life.

Spooling using Modified Equipment for Synthetic Rope

KTLMS spooling equipment has been modified to cater for synthetic rope to prevent damage during installation. Our SRT’s will advise and supervise the spooling of the synthetic rope.

Customer Training and Involvement

KTLMS will train the customer’s personnel in the best and correct splicing methods. We will also advise, assist and train the customer’s personnel in the proper inspection methods so that they have an in-house capability to detect and prevent the use of rope that may have passed its useable working life.

Sampling and Destruction Testing

Periodic sampling (cutting a representative sample from a working rope) followed by a destruction test of that sample will provide a measure of the relative degradation of the rope. This information is useful in assessing the condition of the rope and basing decisions as to the continued suitability of the rope for use. KTL Offshore will conduct the destructive testing using our KimTest 1000 and KimTest 3000 test machines, which are adapted and suitable for synthetic rope testing.
